Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar – Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls
Early morning transfer to the domestic terminal in Addis Ababa for your flight to Bahir Dar. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and begin your exploration after breakfast. You will take a boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the historic island monasteries of Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam, both famous for their beautifully preserved medieval wall paintings and active religious life. On the return journey, you will observe the outlet of the Blue Nile River as it begins its long journey from the lake. In the afternoon, continue with a drive to the famous Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tiss Issat or “Smoking Water,” where you will enjoy a scenic walk and panoramic views depending on seasonal water flow. Overnight: Hotel in Bahir Dar
Day 2: Bahir Dar – Gondar (Camelot of Africa)
After breakfast, drive approximately 180 km to Gondar, once the imperial capital of Ethiopia. Known as the “Camelot of Africa,” Gondar is home to centuries of royal history and impressive architecture. Upon arrival, explore the UNESCO-listed Fasil Ghebbi palace compound, including the two-story palace of Emperor Fasilides, built from stone and mortar in the 17th century. Continue to Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its stunning ceiling of angelic faces, and visit Fasilides Bath, still used during the Timkat festival. The tour also includes the ruins of Queen Mentewab’s palace at Qusquam, historically associated with early European explorers. Overnight: Hotel in Gondar
Day 3: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park – Gondar
After an early breakfast, depart for a full-day excursion to Simien Mountains National Park, one of Africa’s most dramatic mountain ranges. Known for its jagged peaks, deep valleys, and afro-alpine landscapes, the park is home to unique wildlife including the endemic Gelada baboons. You will enjoy scenic hikes along the escarpment, offering breathtaking views and close encounters with wildlife and bird species such as the Lammergeyer and Thick-billed Raven. After lunch and exploration, return toward Gondar with a stop at the Felasha village, where the Ethiopian Jewish community once lived and preserved traditional pottery-making and cultural practices. Overnight: Hotel in Gondar
Day 4: Gondar – Axum – Ancient Civilization
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Axum. Upon arrival, drive approximately 8 km to the town center and begin exploring Ethiopia’s oldest civilization. Axum, once the capital of the Axumite Empire, is considered the cradle of Ethiopian Christianity. Your visit includes the Archaeological Museum, the famous Stelae Field with massive ancient obelisks, and the sacred Church of St. Mary of Zion, believed to house the Ark of the Covenant. Continue to the underground tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebremeskel, the trilingual inscription of King Ezana, and the ruins of the Queen of Sheba’s palace. Overnight: Hotel in Axum
Day 5: Axum – Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, begin exploring the world-famous Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches, often described as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” These extraordinary churches are carved directly into volcanic rock and connected by tunnels and narrow passageways. You will explore the first group of churches before continuing to the second cluster in the afternoon. The day concludes with a visit to the iconic Bete Giorgis (St. George Church), a beautifully carved freestanding structure where daily religious life is still practiced. Overnight: Hotel in Lalibela
Day 6: Lalibela – Addis Ababa – Departure
Early in the morning, visit the eastern group of Lalibela churches, smaller in size but equally impressive, featuring intricate carvings and hidden tunnels. After the visit, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, enjoy free time for shopping and optional city activities.
