Travel Itinerary
Day 2: Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls
Take a morning boat trip on Lake Tana to visit island monasteries and the source of the Blue Nile. In the afternoon, hike to the Blue Nile Falls and enjoy the sunset over the lake. Overnight in Bahir Dar.
Day 3: Drive to Gondar
A four-hour drive through Amhara villages leads to Gondar. Visit the Royal Enclosure with its six castles, Fasilides’s Pool, and the famous painted ceiling of Debre Berhan Selassie church. Overnight in Gondar.
Day 4: Drive to Axum via Simien Mountains
A long but beautiful drive north toward Axum. Enjoy spectacular views of the Simien Mountains and the dramatic Tekeze Valley, home to some of the most rugged landscapes in Ethiopia. Overnight in Axum.
Day 5: Ancient Axum Exploration
Spend a full day visiting Axum’s historical sites: the giant obelisks, the Queen of Sheba’s Bath and Palace, and the St. Mary of Zion church, the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. Overnight in Axum.
Day 6: Yeha Temple & Debre Damo
Visit the 2,500-year-old ruins of Yeha. Afterward, visit the Debre Damo monastery (men only), accessible only by climbing a 15-meter rope. Continue through Tigray to Wukro to see the rock-hewn church of Chirkos. Overnight in Wukro or Mekele.
Day 7: Drive to Lalibela
A full day of driving through the sandstone landscapes of Tigray and the Wollo mountains to reach the holy city of Lalibela. Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 8: The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
Explore the Northwestern and Southeastern clusters of monolithic churches, including the famous cross-shaped Bet Giyorgis (Saint George). Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 9: Drive to Kombolcha via Lake Hayk
Drive south to Kombolcha. Stop at Lake Hayk to visit the local monastery and observe the birdlife along the shore. Overnight in Kombolcha.
Day 10: Return to Addis Ababa
Drive back to the capital via Debre Birhan. Stop at the Mezezo Escarpment for a chance to see Gelada baboons. If it’s a Sunday, visit the lively Senbete market before arriving in Addis Ababa. End of the tour.
