The Simien Mountains National Park

Located in the northern part of Ethiopia approximately at 850kms from the capital, lies the so called Gelada Monkeys Park (The Simien Mountains National park) due to the dominating number in contrast with other fauna. Being a site of Endemism, the park is registered by the UNESCO IN 1978. Its landscape was formed during the Oligocene period of geological history (40-25 million years ago). This dramatic landscape is the result of the erosion of basalt lava flows which have been calculated to be nearly 3000m thick. This geographical phenomenon resulted in the formation of one of the most amazing landscapes in the continent of Africa in general and the water tower of horn of Africa in Particular.
The park comprises endemic fauna and flora that are the flagship species of the country. The Gelada Monkey, The Walia Ibex, The Red Fox are some of the endemic fauna and the Abyssinian Wild Rose, Festuca Gilbertiana, and the Giant Lobellia are the park’s flora endemic.
Apart from its natural attractions, the Simien Mountains National Park is best hiking and trekking site from easy to strenuous adventures that invites remarkable views for visiting adventurers.
