Lake Tana and the Blue Nile

This site is 550 km to the north of the capital, Addis Ababa. The presence of the lake enabled the foundation of a beautiful city, Bahirdar right by the southern side of this largest lake in Ethiopia with surface area of3600 square kilometers. Lake Tana is the source of the Blue Nile that flows out by the southern side of the lake (a spot where the Hippos farewell) and begins its long journey till it joins the White Nile in Khartoum. Apart from being the source of the Blue Nile, Lake Tana is endowed with ancient monasteries built on the peninsulas and islands in the 14th century AD. These monasteries are rich in terms of possessing antiques and amazing paintings displayed inside the inside walls of the churches .Amongst the most beautiful and worth to visit are: Ura Kidanemehiret and Azwa Mariam on Zege peninsula; Narga Sellassie on Dek Island.

The Blue Nile Falls

Thirty five kilometers south of Bahir Dar city lays the small but bucolic village of Tis Issat (smoking fire). This village is named after the Blue Nile water falls over a 42 m high lava barrier and make the water rise up in the air like a smoke. The village Tis Issat is a very lively village full of different activities by the inhabitants mostly small scale individual farmers producing cereals and oilseeds.
