Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Dire Dawa – Harar City Tour & Hyena Feeding
In the morning, take a flight from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival, meet your driver and begin a scenic drive of approximately 55 km to Harar, passing through the eastern Ethiopian highlands.
On arrival in Harar, begin a guided exploration of the ancient walled city of Harar Jugol, one of the most important Islamic cultural centers in Africa. Walk through its maze-like alleys and discover centuries-old Harari architecture, colorful residential quarters, and traditional community life.
Visit key cultural and historical sites including the Arthur Rimbaud House Museum, the former residence of the French poet, as well as Al Jami Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in East Africa. Continue exploring traditional Harari homes known for their beautifully decorated interiors and cultural symbolism.
In the late afternoon, experience one of Harar’s most extraordinary traditions—the Hyena Feeding Ceremony. Outside the city walls, local “Hyena Men” feed wild hyenas by hand, a ritual that symbolizes harmony between humans and wildlife and has been practiced for generations.
Overnight in Harar
Day 2: Harar – Dire Dawa – Addis Ababa Departure
After breakfast, depart Harar and drive back to Dire Dawa.
Upon arrival, explore the lively Kefira Market, one of the most colorful trading hubs in eastern Ethiopia, where spices, textiles, and everyday goods are traded in a vibrant atmosphere. Continue to the historic Dire Dawa Railway Station, a reminder of Ethiopia’s early railway history and French influence.
After the visit, transfer to Dire Dawa airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, connect with your international departure or continue your travel arrangements.
